Just like your smartphone receives software updates that improve performance and add features, your Signia hearing aids can also receive firmware updates. These updates can improve sound quality, fix bugs, enhance Bluetooth connectivity, and sometimes even add entirely new features to your existing hearing aids, all without visiting the clinic.
What You Need
- Compatible Signia hearing aids: Bluetooth-enabled models that support over-the-air updates
- Signia App: Downloaded from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store
- Stable internet connection: Wi-Fi is recommended for downloading updates
- Charged hearing aids: Ensure at least 50% battery before starting an update
- Smartphone: iPhone (iOS 14 or later) or Android (8.0 or later)
Step-by-Step Update Process
Step 1: Open the Signia App
Launch the Signia app on your smartphone. Make sure your hearing aids are turned on and connected to the app via Bluetooth. You should see your hearing aids displayed on the main screen.
Step 2: Check for Updates
Navigate to the settings or device information section of the app. If a firmware update is available, you will see a notification or update badge. The app will display the current firmware version and the new version available.
Step 3: Download the Update
Tap the update button to download the new firmware. This downloads to your phone first, so you need an internet connection at this stage. The download is typically small (a few megabytes) and takes 1-2 minutes on a good connection.
Step 4: Install the Update
Once downloaded, the app will prompt you to install the firmware on your hearing aids. Keep your hearing aids close to your phone during this process. The installation transfers the update via Bluetooth and typically takes 5-15 minutes per hearing aid.
Step 5: Restart and Verify
After installation, your hearing aids will restart automatically. The app will confirm the update was successful and display the new firmware version. Your settings and programs are preserved during the update.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Update Not Appearing
- Ensure your Signia app is updated to the latest version
- Check that your hearing aid model supports over-the-air updates
- Try disconnecting and reconnecting your hearing aids in the app
- Not all hearing aids receive updates simultaneously; yours may be scheduled for a later rollout
Update Fails Mid-Process
- Restart your hearing aids by opening and closing the battery door (or placing in the charging case)
- Restart your phone and the Signia app
- Try the update again with a stable Wi-Fi connection
- If repeated failures occur, contact us for assistance
Hearing Sounds Different After Update
Some firmware updates include improvements to sound processing algorithms. Give yourself a day or two to adjust to the new sound. If the difference is uncomfortable, visit our clinic for a fitting adjustment.
Updates at the Clinic
If your hearing aids do not support over-the-air updates, or if you prefer professional assistance, our audiologists can update your hearing aid firmware during a clinic visit using the Connexx fitting software. This also allows us to verify the update was successful and make any necessary adjustments to your settings. All Signia hearing aids purchased from our clinic receive free firmware update service.
Automatic vs Manual Updates
The Signia app can be set to notify you automatically when updates are available. We recommend enabling these notifications so you never miss an important update. However, the actual installation always requires your confirmation, so you are always in control.
