Heat, sweat, humidity, and dust can all damage the delicate electronics inside your hearing device.

With proper care and attention, your hearing aids can survive and perform well throughout Pakistan's scorching summers. Here is everything you need to know.

Sweat and Your Hearing Aids

Sweat is the biggest summer enemy of hearing aids. Unlike pure water, sweat contains salt, oils, and acids that are corrosive to electronic contacts, battery terminals, and microphone ports. In Pakistan's summer heat, even sitting in a non-air-conditioned room can produce significant perspiration around the ears.

How to Manage Sweat

• Wipe regularly: Carry a soft, dry microfiber cloth and wipe your hearing aids every few hours during hot days.
• Use sweat covers: Hearing aid sweat sleeves or covers create a barrier between the device and moisture. Ask about these at our clinic.
• Remove during heavy sweating: If you are doing physical work, exercising, or spending extended time outdoors in the heat, consider removing your hearing aids temporarily.
• Dry your ears: Before reinserting hearing aids, make sure the area behind and around your ears is completely dry.
• Nightly dehumidifier: Use a hearing aid drying kit every single night during summer. This is non-negotiable in Pakistan's climate.

Heat Damage Prevention

Extreme heat can warp plastic components, damage batteries, and degrade adhesives inside hearing aids. Pakistan's summer temperatures regularly exceed the safe operating range for electronic devices.

• Never leave in a car: A car's interior can reach 70+ degrees Celsius in Pakistan's summer sun. This will destroy your hearing aids.
• Avoid direct sunlight: Do not place hearing aids on windowsills, dashboards, or any surface exposed to direct sun.
• Store properly: When not wearing your hearing aids, store them in their case in a cool, dry place away from windows and heat sources.

Humidity and Monsoon Season

• Carry a waterproof case: Keep your hearing aids in a waterproof case when you step outside during monsoon. Sudden rain showers are common and unpredictable.
• Check tubing regularly: Humidity can cause mold growth inside BTE hearing aid tubing. Inspect the tubing weekly and replace if you see any discoloration.

Dust and Sand Protection

Summer in Pakistan often means dusty conditions, especially during dust storms (andhi) that hit Punjab and Sindh. Fine dust particles can clog microphone ports and affect sound quality.

• Clean microphone ports: Use the cleaning brush that came with your hearing aids to gently brush the microphone openings daily.
• Use wax guards: Ensure your hearing aid's wax guard or filter is in place and replace it monthly during dusty months.
• Cover during dust storms: If you are caught in a dust storm, cover your ears with a scarf or dupatta to protect your hearing aids.

Summer Battery Care

Heat affects battery performance differently than cold. While batteries may actually last slightly longer in mild warmth, extreme heat above 40 degrees Celsius can cause batteries to discharge prematurely or even leak.

• Store batteries indoors: Keep spare batteries in a cool, dry room. Never store them in the glove compartment of your car.
• Check for leakage: Inspect your battery compartment regularly. A leaking battery can corrode the contacts and cause permanent damage.
• Remove batteries overnight: Open the battery door when not wearing your hearing aids to allow ventilation and prevent heat buildup.

Summer Maintenance Schedule
