The Signia Motion (BTE) and Signia Pure (RIC) are two different hearing aid styles that use the same processing technology but deliver it in fundamentally different packages. Understanding the Styles
Motion (BTE - Behind-the-Ear)
The Motion BTE houses all components, including the speaker, behind the ear. Sound travels through a tube and ear hook to an ear mold in the ear canal. It is the traditional and most robust hearing aid style.
Pure (RIC - Receiver-in-Canal)
The Pure RIC places only the speaker (receiver) inside the ear canal, connected by a thin wire to the main unit behind the ear. The behind-the-ear unit is much smaller because it does not contain the speaker.
Size and Visibility
This is often the deciding factor. The Pure RIC is significantly smaller and more discreet than the Motion BTE. The thin wire connecting to the ear is nearly invisible, and the behind-the-ear unit can hide completely behind most ears. The Motion BTE is larger and more visible, with a noticeable ear hook and tubing.
Winner: Pure RIC for discretion. If appearance matters to you, the Pure is clearly more discreet.
Sound Quality
At the same technology tier (1Nx, 5Nx, 7Nx), both Motion and Pure share identical processing chips. However, the RIC design delivers sound differently, and many users find RIC sound more natural because the speaker is closer to the eardrum and the open fitting allows natural low-frequency sounds to enter the ear canal normally.
Winner: Pure RIC for natural sound quality, especially for mild to moderate hearing loss with open fittings.
Power and Hearing Loss Range
The Motion BTE has a significant advantage for severe and profound hearing loss. Its larger speaker behind the ear can produce more amplification than the tiny RIC receiver. The Motion SP (Super Power) can deliver up to 143 dB SPL, making it suitable for profound hearing loss that RIC devices cannot adequately address.

Durability and Maintenance
BTE hearing aids are generally more durable because their speakers are protected inside the main housing behind the ear. RIC receivers, being inside the ear canal, are exposed to earwax and moisture, which can cause failures over time. Receiver replacements are straightforward and affordable, but BTE avoids this issue entirely.
Winner: Motion BTE for long-term durability and lower maintenance.
Battery Life
The Motion BTE uses Size 13 batteries lasting 10-14 days. The Pure RIC uses Size 312 batteries lasting 5-7 days. The BTE's larger battery compartment accommodates a bigger battery for longer life.

Comfort
This varies by individual. The Pure RIC's lighter weight and thin wire make it very comfortable for most users. The Motion BTE's ear hook and tubing can feel more secure but also more noticeable. For all-day wear, many users prefer the RIC's lighter feel.
